Here we are at the middle of summer almost and here is the most current view of the mailbox that inspired this blog and the Flickr group: Rusty Mailboxes. The honeysuckle and other vegetation are trying to take over.

Laura Hermann found this one near Coleman, Oklahoma. While talking to a neighbor of this unused box she found out that the box was made to look like the owners house. Note how the flag shows the map of Oklahoma!

Mafalda2001 found another in Porto Salvo, Oeiras, Portugal. When you look at this photo for a while your eye bounces all around from the mailbox, to the flowers to the fence section and the rolled paper sticking out.

For the above RM Laura says, "I know the owners of this rural mailbox. Every time they turned around their mailbox was vandalized by kids. Finally, in desperation, they had this one made. All that happened to it was the vandals tried to rip the front off which slightly bent it and pulled on the flag. After that it didn't always close properly and the rain would get in. My husband put a new latch on it for them. "

Mafalda2001 0ur ambassador in Portugal ound this one in Leião, Oeiras, Lisbon.
Mafada says, "Quite an old one. That was a repair shop at one time. In those times the businesses were downstairs and people lived upstairs. Among other stuff they repaired sewing machines thus the use of the recycled table legs of the Singer machines to do the fence. The people are now retired. I doubt if they will replace the old mailbox, the new ones don't last as long."
Obrigado, Mafalda!
